I love teaching. I love thinking about it, talking about it, and the classroom time itself! This is my website about elementary education. I used to be an elementary school teacher and a college instructor, so I hope to add content that will be helpful both to current educators and to teacher-leaders. With your encouragement, this site will continue to be a resource, especially for new teachers in low-income schools. This website is my way of saying "Thank you!" to all the educators who have made my life easier. Enjoy!

I Have an Idea- 9-17-06

So all of you who are longtime Teach-and-Learn friends have heard me talk about upgrading this site.  I think I've figured out a way to do it.  First of all, the sheer number of pages here made it impossible to do a one-shot rebuild somewhere else.  So for the past year I've been tinkering with CMSes (when I wasn't studying, which wasn't often!) and I think I've got it, now.

Introducing the brand new TeachersCoach.net .  A site, especially for new teachers, where you can get some virtual coaching!

The nice thing about having it as a blog for teachers is that you all can post comments, and that it will be easier for me to update.  So far I've moved and revised most of the Reading section, so check out TeachersCoach.net/Reading .  I've even added more info about teaching reading.  I'm still working on figuring out an easy way to set up downloads, though, so those are still here.  In addition, the site is being sponsored through Google Adsense, hopefully that will help keep my website costs within my grad student budget...  From the table of contents you can see that it's pretty ambitious, but classes start Monday so it may take awhile for the outline to be filled in.  In the meantime, enjoy, visit our sponsors, and post comments!

9/17/06 pm UPDATE: I just found out that my host is dealing with database problems. So getting to the reading page was taking a really long time. I apologize especially because today is Sunday and new teachers may be feeling nervous enough as it is ("you mean, I have to go back ?!"). Here's a backup: teacherscoachreading.htm .

(It seems to be working now...)

Happy First Week of School!-9-7-06

This summer I had an opportunity to help train 87 wonderful beginning teachers.  Thus, September 5th was a special day - the first day of school for NYC public school teachers, including the teachers I worked with this summer.  Congratulations, teachers!

A few updates:

  • My new professional blog is up and running at AyanaKee.net.  Come on by!
  • I'm moving some of the pages from here to there, particularly those that are about my writing and research.  For updates on info that's here, I'll link to there (like http://ayanakee.net/nyc_learning_standards), and the temporary "blog dot teach and learn" site will come down.
  • Thank you to Ms. B for the question she emailed me about assessment.  I've added info at For_Word_Study.
  • This site logged about 1,000 visitors in August!  Hello, everyone, including those of you who found us through www.SitesforTeachers.com...

Happy Teaching!

Hello, from Spring Break!- 3-27-06

Hello, everybody!  I've missed you since I started grad school; but studying education full-time has been amazing.  I'm writing you from an inspiring conference about alternative teacher certification, put on by the National Association for Alternative Certification, www.alt-teachercert.org.

So since beginning grad school, my life has been crazy-busy. In the bits of time I was able to squeeze in, I successfully transferred this site to a new, and better, hosting service.  Unfortunately, my contact list email account didn't transfer- so if you tried to join the contact list this school year, I didn't get your info.  Email me though, if you want to be on it!

Also, off and on, I've tried to learn enough programming to change this site from html\css to more of a content management approach.  After trying a bunch of different formats, I've concluded that the conversion is just too complicated- in large part because of the OVER 100 PAGES, MANY WITH MULTIPLE SECTIONS, FULL OF ADVICE AND DOWNLOADS on this site!!

I've really enjoyed building this site over the past two years, and having a chance to communicate with all of you.  I will be building another site to reflect my new 'job' as a researcher-in-training, so I won't be updating this site regularly. But I'll definitely keep www.Teach-and-Learn.org on the web as long as teachers continue to visit.  (Hopefully, that will be a long time!)  As soon as I have a new site, I'll let y'all know.  In the meantime, thank you, and...

Happy Teaching!
