Ayana Kee loves
teaching. She loves thinking about it, talking about it, and the classroom time
itself! In 1994, Ayana was introduced to teaching through the Teach for America
program and she currently teaches children in Brooklyn, New York. She has taught general and special education students in grades K, 1,
2, 3 and 6 in California, Oregon and New
York. She has
facilitated several workshops for educators and has served as an invited panelist
for Teach For America – New York. In 2003 and 2004, she worked as a part-time
instructor for Mercy College’s New Teacher Residency Program.
Ayana graduated from Duke University with a BA in Cognitive Psychology in
1994 and from the University of Oregon with a MS in Special Education in
1998. In 2000, she was
awarded a Starr-Revson fellowship from District 13 and New York University. In
both 2003 and 2004, she won Donors Choose minigrants for classroom projects.
In 2005, an essay by Ayana was published in
One Teacher in 10, 2nd Edition (K. Jennings, Ed., Alyson
Books). Earlier this year, Ayana was admitted to a doctoral program at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education
and was selected to receive their highest academic honor, the Presidential
Fellowship.
Ayana recently developed this website,
www.Teach-and-Learn.org, as a support for early-career teachers. She wishes all
new teachers the
best of luck as they engage in one of the most meaningful activities possible:
making a difference in the life of a child.
