More About Homework

Now that the students have gotten used to the homework packets, it’s time to add more homework!

Reading

How do we become better readers?  We read, read, read!  To this end, students should continue to read for 20-30 minutes each evening.  This week, we will start our Scholastic book club!  This way families can purchase books at prices as low as 95¢.  I have attached an order form and an envelope.  Please fill out the order form and enclose the money in the envelope.   You can pay with cash or with a check made out to Scholastic.  This order is due by October 19th.

Writing

It’s time to start our spelling & vocabulary homework.  The first 4 lists will concentrate on the 60 most common words in children’s books.  Your child should know most of these words.  After that, we’ll use spelling words from the third-grade Signatures program.  Students will need access to a children’s dictionary, scissors, glue, and crayons.  Students will study the words Monday through Thursday and be tested on Friday.

Math

Students have three types of math homework assignments.  First our Home Links are tied to the topics we are studying in class.  Second, the Math Boxes, provide practice and review for concepts already covered in Everyday Math.  Finally, students will do CIMS story problems.  These problems have a similar format to the city-wide tests.
