March 10, 2003

Hi!

I hope you and your family had a good weekend.  I’m looking forward to seeing you all on Wednesday and Thursday for Parent-Teacher Conferences!  At conferences I will be giving out our spring report card grades.  Here’s some information in advance.

About Spring Report Cards

Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking

These grades are based on how well your child reads and writes stories.  The best way for children to improve in reading is for them to read, read, read!  Children need a variety of books that are interesting to them and are not too hard (no more than 2 tricky words on a page).  Books can be checked out from the library, bought at a bookstore, or borrowed from our classroom.   Listening and speaking grades are based on your child’s participation in class discussions and presentations.

Math

About every two months, students take an Everyday Math placement exam, which shows how well they are progressing.  In addition, math grades are based how students do during lessons and on unit quizzes.

Social Studies and Science

These grades are based on how your child did during lessons and on quizzes.  Please note- science fair project grades are not included on the report card.

Music/Art, Health Education, Physical Education, Computer, Spanish

Ms. ***, Ms. ***, Mr. ***, and Ms. *** give these grades.

Personal and Social Growth, Work Habits

These grades are based on my observation of your child.  Please talk with your child about any of these areas where your child got a 1 or a 2.  Generally, students who listen, work hard, and get along with others, learn more.

Homework

Some students have done every page in every packet.  Other students have been doing some of their homework but leaving 2 or more pages blank.  Your child’s grade is based on the completeness of his or her homework, including the reading done at home.

Calendar

Monday, March 10- bring Science Fair Projects to school.

Wednesday, March 12- Open School Evening

Thursday, March 13- Open School Afternoon
