Class 2-208 Newsletter!

October 6, 2003

Hello!

Hello, everyone!  I hope that you had a wonderful weekend.  During part of last week and over the weekend, I was helping a family member who was ill.  Thank you for your understanding and well-wishes.  I also want to send out encouragement to any families who are dealing with illness or injuries.  I hope everyone is better soon!  Here is a newsletter about what’s happening in our class.  Look for a newsletter every couple of weeks on colored paper!

What We’re Learning

Reading and Writing: My focus during literacy has been to get to know the children as readers and writers.  This includes giving each child a one-on-one reading test.   It also includes closely examining the children’s writing skills by watching as they write stories and taking a close look at their writing once it’s complete.  It’s wonderful to have so many students who love to read and write!

Math:  We have been reviewing math concepts and math routines.   How high can your child count?  How high can s\he count by 10s, 5s, 2s?  Students have also had a chance to practice telling time on clocks with hands and counting money.  If I have 2 quarters, 1 nickel, and 4 pennies, how much money do I have?

Social Studies:  Soon we will be finishing our review of world geography.  Can your child point to each continent and say its name?  How about each ocean?  Also, an ongoing part of our social studies curriculum is the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP).  RCCP helps students communicate, develop friendships, and resolve conflicts without fighting.  It is a very effective program for increasing students’ interpersonal intelligence.

Science:  Does your child like bugs?  Soon we will begin studying the life cycle of mealworms and we will conduct mealworm experiments.  Stay tuned for more on this wormderful unit!

Calendar

Mon. Oct. 6- Yom Kippur.  No school.

Mon. Oct 13- Columbus Day.  No school.

Wish List:  Crackers!

Second-grade doesn’t have lunch until 12:30PM.  It seems that by about 10AM, little tummies start grumbling.  If each child brings in a box of crackers or cookies for our class, I can give the students a snack each day around 10.  The tummies will thank you!

Thank Yous

Thank you so much to all of the family members whom I’ve been in contact with regarding their children.  The easiest way for me to communicate with you is probably if you send a note with your child.  Otherwise, I can be reached at ***.   Together, we can help the children succeed!

Have a great day!

From Ayana Kee, Second-Grade Teacher
